  Summerhill V Dunsany

Summerhill in Summerhill, now there was a tall order, but at six thirty the red and white of Dunsany were heading home with two points as company. Summerhill as always made it difficult , they are without a doubt the most physically strong team in the county and you will know you have been in a game long after the final whistle has gone.

The Hill, made the best possible start, pouncing on some indecision among our backs which resulted in an immediate goal, but heads didn't sink and we started applying some of our own pressure.Karen Ward, Jenny Cusack and Lisa Donnelly shot narrowly wide on a few occasions, it so easily have been one of those days. When half time was blown we trailed by two points, 1-2 to 0-3 points.

The second half was a game in itself, swinging one way and then the next. The game was quite rough in stages but over the hour the ref did prove himself to be, on a whole, very impartial and well capable of keeping tempers from fraying(Ack ack ack). We started the second half the brightest, scoring a goal within minutes of the restart, but Summerhill soon clawed the advantage back with a goal of their own.

Collete O'Connell produced an excelent performance and was solid as a rock in the defence, making the job seem effortless, she was well served my both Joanne and Alison through out. Sinead Cusack had the job of marking Darina Shaw and made Darina look increasing average as the game wore on.This battle was crucial as Shaw is one of the hills main play makers. Lisa Donnelly was unlucky with the break of the ball but still battled hard and made one or two very productive runs.

Karen Ward was the saviour of the day snatching victory from the jaws of the 'Hill', with a last gasp goal. We needed a point to draw the match, but Karen(wearing the number 11) had other notions and struck a goal from a free, in true Christine O Brien style. The Hill were allowed one more forage down the pitch but the Dunsany backs being as mean and hungry as usual didn't let them even pull a point back and so the match finished, with Dunsany two points to the good. Hard luck to the blue and yellow girls who put up a great display of footballing and hard work. I am sure they will go far this year.
