Dunsany
Ladies Football Club have achieved
considerable success since founded
nine years ago. The club was founded
in January 1992. One of the prime
movers behind the formation was
Ruth Lawlor , an Australian woman
living in Dunsany at the time.
We first won the Junior Championship
in 1992 beating the favorites Meath
Hill and were runners up of the
junior League. The following year
we were runners up in the league
and championship finals , but adequately
made up for this in 1994. This was
the year that the team from Dunsany,
Kilmessan and surrounding areas
beat St. Ultans in the senior championship
final at Dunderry, and two months
later in November, achieved the
double, beating Meath Hill in the
senior league final at Castletown.
In 1994 the club were also runners
up in the U-16, U-18 and Junior
League finals.
Also that year, the club captain
Anne Marie 'Skinny' Dennehy captained
the Meath team that beat Dongeal
in the All-Ireland Junior Football
Championship in Croke Park, with
Christine O'Brien and Dearbhla O'Carroll
also starring.
In 1995 Dunsany again won the Senior
league, were runners up in the U-18
final and were beaten by St. Ultans
in the minor championship. On the
8th of Sept 1996 it was the turn
of St Michaels to face the might
of the red & white of Dunsany
trained by Robert Bradley with Rene
& Patsy O'Sullivan and also
May & Andy Lynch also involved.
The match was fought to the bitter
end but ended on level scores with
Dunsany 3-12 to St. Michael's 4-9.
Dunsany however came back and won
the Senior Championship title two
weeks later with a score of 4-5
to St. Michael's 0-9. The club also
won the Senior & Junior League
(Div.2) titles in 1996 and were
runners up in the U-16 and U-18
finals.
In 1997 Dunsany were again crowned
Senior County Champions and League
winners and were also runners up
in the U-16 and U-18 finals. In
1998 the Club were runners up in
the Senior Championship.
On 12th of Sept 1999 Dunsany Ladies
returned to form and beat Seneschalstown
5-13 to 2-15 in what was a marathon
match in very wet conditions at
Pairc Tailteann, Navan. Victory
on the day secured Dunsany's fifth
Senior Championship title in their
seven year history. |
